Athanasopoulos-Zekkos leads GEER mission for Hurricane Ida. Final report is released.
Apr 27, 2023
A GEER report was just published on Hurricane Ida. The report presents results from the reconnaissance efforts of a large team of professionals from academia, industry and the US Army Corps of Engineers following Hurricane Ida that made landfall on August 29, 2021 at the coast of Southern Louisiana. This event brought approximately 13ft of storm surge and resulted in substantial flooding of several areas in Southern Louisiana, as well as electrical power disruption that affected more than 1M local citizens for almost a week. A unique aspect of this Hurricane event was the fact that as it moved further inland towards the Northeast US, it merged with another powerful non-tropical front causing it to regain tropical force winds and release record breaking rainfall across Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey. The report includes meteorological information on the event, it describes the Hurricane's impact on infrastructure in south Louisiana as well the impact of the subsequent flooding in PA, NJ and NY. It also presents the data collected in collaboration with the NHERI RAPID facility. The work was conducted under the auspices of the Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) Association and the Nearshore Extreme Events Reconnaissance (NEER) Association that are supported by the National Science Foundation.
Prof. Adda Athanasopoulos-Zekkos led the reconnaissance team that visited the sites in September and October of 2021 and is a co-Editor of the report.
The publication is available by GEER and can be found here.
