UC Berkeley Geosystems hosts Memorial Event for Prof. James K. Mitchell
Feb 10, 2025

The Geosystems faculty at UC Berkeley in collaboration with Prof. Russel Green from Virginia Tech, Prof. Chris Baxter from the University of Rhode Island and members of Prof. Mitchell's family, co-hosted a Memorial event for Prof. James K. Mitchell on January 24th, 2025 at the Clark Kerr campus in Berkeley.
The full-day event was attended by more than 150 participants and included presentations by several former PhD students of Prof. Mitchell, as well as his oldest son, Rick Mitchell, and two panels featuring former students as well as additional members of the Mitchell family.
The event also featured a fundraising campaign to support the James K. Mitchell fellowship fund. The UC Berkeley GeoSystems program is establishing an endowment for a JK Mitchell Graduate Fellowship. The initial funding was provided by Prof. Mitchell's former students and our goal is to raise $150,000 to reach the endowment requirements. To this end, the faculty in the Geosystems program committed to match dollar for dollar all new donations up to a total of $50,000.
Donations can be made by check payable to UC Regents with a cover memo that the funds are a gift to the James K. (JK) Mitchell Geotechnical Graduate Fellowship Endowment, fund number #RS0069000, and sent to:
